San Joaquin AIDS Foundation

The San Joaquin AIDS Foundation is a grassroots organization, founded in 1986 by concerned community members, doctors and nurses.  It was created to provide education, direct client services and HIV testing.  We provide educational presentations for civic, social, and religious groups, in-service training for Health Care Providers and Emergency Response Personnel, drop-in counseling and crisis prevention, outreach to at-r, isk communities, and a c, ourt-ordered HIV Probation Education Program.  Our direct client services are for people living with HIV/AIDS, their friends and families.  These services include counseling and emotional support, volunteer support, emergency financial and pharmaceutical assistance, and crisis intervention.

Since federal funding is becoming more limited, and the AIDS Foundation does not receive any money from national HIV/AIDS organization, it has to rely on private donations and local fundraising events.  We have something for almost everyone’s tastes, whether it is our Wine Stroll, our annual Crab Feed in February or our Christmas Home Tour during the first weekend of December.  Also, December 1st is World AIDS Day and we have an annual Candlelight Vigil to commemorate those who have passed due to this disease but also encourage those who continue the fight against it.  The Foundation also receives funds from AIDS Walk San Joaquin, which has the annual AIDS Walk in May.

Friends for Sophia's Dog Park

Friends for Sophia's Dog Park was established as a grass roots non-profit in 2004 and became a full-fledged 502(c)(3) public charity two years later.  Since that time we have become more and more active in local communities in regard to animal welfare.

We made our charter/mission very broad to include the establishment of legal dog parks, companion animal rescue, feral cat colony management and, in particular, educating the public to become responsible pet owners.

*Turlock Dog Park.  We worked very closely with the City of Turlock to establish their first public dog park.  We attended and spoke at all of the public hearings.  We raised funding to help pay for this dog park.  And we continue to have a page on our web site with information about this park, whereby supporters may contribute to it's upkeep.

*County Dog Parks.  We presented information to the Stanislaus County Parks & Recreation Commission on several occasions.  This Commission has unanimously voted to support the creation of dog parks in several of the County Parks.  We are continuing our efforts to make this happen and following up with various government agencies and commissions.

*Patterson Dog Park.  We worked closely with the Parks & Recreation Department of the City of Patterson and upgraded their existing dog park.  We added a new dog drinking fountain, several new shade trees, a wind-break/shade hedge and permanent benches, along with an area we call a Canine Learning Enrichment Center.  This area has stairs, hurdles, tunnels and tire jumps to entertain the dogs.  We are continuing our work with the City of Patterson to again add even more amenities to this dog park.  We are currently discussing several ideas and these will be incorporated by fall.

*Tracy/Mountain House Dog Parks.  We were also able to start a brief program to upgrade the Tracy dog park and add a new dog park to Mountain House.  We hope to have more information on these two programs in San Joaquin County very soon.  (This is not on our web site.)

**Fund Raisers.  We have had several people approach us to put on fund raising events for us.  One is Inspiracy, which is a local theatre group.  They are putting on a fund raiser at the Westside Theatre in Newman, CA July 10th and 11th.  They find local undiscovered talent and allow them to perform original plays and musical pieces.  We would appreciate as many people as possible supporting this event.  If one has never been to the restored Westside Theatre, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the theatre, the historic town of Newman, local talent and at the same time help our best friends, our animal companions.  To purchase tickets, go to www.westsidetheatre.org

**Volunteers.  We are made up entirely of volunteers.  We have a wonderful core group, but with the economy the way it's been g, oing many have had to move out of the area.  We need volunteers in all areas, not just Stanislaus County.  We want to help all communities establish safe dog parks and have effective animal welfare programs.  If anyone would like to volunteer, if only for one project, you are more than welcome.

**Donations.  We need donations for our many projects.  In addition to money, we accept used printer ink cartridges, gift cards from Lowe's, Home Depot, Kinko's and Staples.  We are all volunteers so 100% of our funding goes toward our projects.  We have no overhead and no salaries.  And, as a 501(c)(3) public charity, all donations are tax deductible.

The Society for Handicapped Children & Adults

PROGRAMS AND SERVICES AT A GLANCE:

Loan Closet

The Society for Handicapped Children and Adults maintains a Loan Closet of adaptive equipment such as wheelchairs, bedside commodes, walkers, crutches, slide boards, and shower chairs. This free service is made available to anyone in need, from those experiencing a temporary disability to someone with a permanent disability.
There is never any charge for this equipment, and we simply ask clients to return items when no longer needed. Most of the Loan Closet equipment is donated. When donated equipment arrives, it receives a thorough inspection, cleaning and repair. The Society purchases parts to ensure that all equipment is in good working order. We are assisted by the outstanding work of volunteers who come weekly to inspect, repair and clean donations.

Society Home Support

Many elderly and disabled members of our community are not able to drive for medical appointments or grocery shopping. The Society Home Support program helps to meet these needs. Our volunteers provide needed transportation for these basic health concerns. All volunteers are carefully screened. In addition to the obvious benefits, this program provides some limited companionship. Our volunteers also have the opportunity to identify other unmet needs the client may have and then we are able to try to find resources to assist in these other areas.

Special Needs Fund

Many individuals of all ages in our community do not have health insurance or the financial resources to purchase the medical and adaptive equipment they need to maintain their health and independence.
The Society for Handicapped Special Needs Fund Program was born in 1987 to help meet these basic needs and become a safety net for those who need it most. Today, as more of our population is uninsured, our community ages and health care costs rise, more and more people need assistance to purchase necessary health aids and adaptive equipment.
If you want more information about this program or know someone who needs assistance to purchase adaptive equipment, medical supplies or needs a wheelchair ramp and can benefit from the assistance of the Special Needs Program please call Carole McFarlane, Director of Oper, ations at 209-524-3536.

Sign Language

Beginning back in the early 1990’s, the Society for Handicapped Children and Adults has offered beginning, intermediate and advanced Sign Language Classes. Staffed by three paid instructors, the Society has taught approximately two thousand five hundred community members to sign. Many of the participants in these classes do not have hearing problems themselves, but have family, friends, or co-workers who must communicate using signing. These classes significantly enhance communication in social and family settings.

Society for Handicapped Recreation Programs:

Skiing Unlimited

Skiing Unlimited is a snow and water ski program for physically challenged children and adults. Since 1990, Skiing Unlimited has provided access to the sport of skiing for many blind, deaf, paraplegic, quadriplegic, and developmentally-disabled individuals who would otherwise be denied the opportunity to share in exhilarating outdoor activities. With adaptive equipment, trained volunteers who assist our clients, and special instructions, there are few disabilities too severe to prevent participation. We believe that these recreational opportunities enhance the self-confidence of our clients and help the community to “see beyond the wheelchairs” and recognize the qualities and potential of physically-challenged individuals.

Adapted Bicycle Camp

Beg, inning in 2006, the Society of Handicapped Children and Adults, through a partnership with several area non profit agencies, held its inaugural Adapted Bicycle Camp. This program has provided a unique bicycling experience for over 75 physically challenged children. Through the use of specialized bicycles, the children were able to learn to ride a two wheel bicycle. The Society is looking forward to continuing this special program.

Day on the Farm

The Society for Handicapped Children and Adults held its inaugural   “Day on the Farm” camp for individuals that have Down syndrome in the Fall of 2008.  Children and adults  ages 3 to 53  experienced horse back riding, horse grooming, a miniature farm animal petting zoo, a Chuck Wagon style dinner, hay rides, games, activities and singing around the camp fire with of course…smores.   Day on the Farm will be offered at various times of the year for individuals with all disabilities.  For more information, call 524-3536 or visit www.societyforhandicapped.org.

Referrals and Information

Each month we receive many telephone calls from disabled people who have important unmet needs. When these needs involve services that we don’t provide, we work with clients to put them in touch with a group or an organization that can meet their needs. This is an important service, since many people become confused and discouraged when trying to find help in the maze of public and private programs.
Website
In 2007 Society for Handicapped introduced our website that showcases all of the programs and services we offer to the community.  The most current information regarding the Society for Handicapped programs and services is found on our website at Societyforhandicapped.org

California Office of Traffic Safety

CLICK IT OR TICKET

The California Office of Traffic Safety reminds all drivers to buckle up!  California has seen improvements in seat belt use in recent years, but the issue of buckling up is still a serious concern, especially among teens.

Teens buckle up far less frequently than adults do. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), teenage drivers and passengers are among those least likely to wear their seat belts.  Observed seat belt use among teens and young adults (16 to 24 years old) stood at 76 percent in 2006 – the lowest of any age group. In fact, in 2006 the majority (58%) of young people 16 to 20 years old involved in fatal motor vehicle crashes were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of their accident.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the U.S.  Each year, more than 5000 teens aged 16 - 20 are killed in passenger vehicle crashes.  During 2006, a teen died in a traffic crash an average of once every hour during weekends and nearly once every two hours during the week.  Teens are also at far greater risk of death in an alcohol-related crash than the overall population, despite the fact that they are below the minimum drinking age.  Among 15- to 20-year-old drivers involved in fatal crashes in 2006, 31 percent of the drivers who were killed had been drinking and 77 percent of these drivers were unrestrained.

In an effort to encourage seatbelt use, the California Office of Traffic Safety is working to make people of all ages better aware of the fines they'll have to pay if caught traveling unbuckled.  Drivers can face a first time fine of $132 -- and when children under six are not properly secured in a vehicle, the parent or driver can receive "one point" on their driving record in addition to a ticket of $435 for their first offense.

SOMETHING NEW!

The state budget crisis has affected the MediCAL healthcare system.

On  June 30, 2009, MediCAL “Optional Benefits” for adults over 18 years of age will be cut.

Therefore we recommend that people with MediCAL call our office to schedule an appointment before their benefits are cut.  After June 30, 2009, there will be no MediCAL eyeglasses benefit for adult patients.  Other healthcare types affected are: Dental, Mental Health, Chiropractic, and more are affected as well.

MediCAL benefits for medically related eye health issues and for children under 18 are not affected.  Patients with glaucoma, cataracts, diabetes, hypertension, eye infections, or eye allergies can still receive their eye health care at our office.

Our office has special frame and lens packages that will fit everyone’s budget.

Relay for Life aka "UOP Mini Relay"
Teaming up with the American Cancer Society
April 26th from 1-4PM

This is a student class project (graduating seniors) The goal is to raise money for the American Cancer Society.  (patient services, prevention/ detection, research)

Event will be held on the UOP campus (intermural field on Brookside Road)

We are encouraging UOP students/ faculty/ staff to form teams and go out to walk and raise money for their team

Also encouraging the community to come out to walk

Facts on Relay for Life:
What is Relay for Life?

Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. It offers everyone in a community an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length.

Why Relay?
One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime. The funds raised at Relay save lives by funding cutting-edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life-affirming patient services. It is because of your involvement that we are able to save lives, help those battling cancer, and empower all to fight back against the disease.

California Transplant Donor Network

“Take Responsibility” campaign is a program out of the Bureau of Land Management and a joint venture with the California Fire Alliance.  What we’re  doing is educating people about the importance of creating and maintaining 100 feet of clean, open space around their properties – especially those people that live on the wildland urban interface.  This 100 feet of clean, open space, or defensible space – helps prevent the spreading of wildfires and increases the changes of  saving your family and home in the event of a wildfire.

There are five easy steps to make 100 feet of defensible space:
1. Remove dead shrubs, dried grass, fallen branches and dried leaves 100 feet around your house.
2. Trim and separate plans and shrubs to stop fire from spreading.
3. Remove ladder fuels.  Ladder fuels are plants, shrubs and low branches that let a fire on the ground climb into the trees.
4. Clear five feet around the base of the house and fill the space with fire resistant plants or materials such as rocks or gravel.
5. Take care of the clean, open space 100 feet around your home on a regular basis.

Stanislaus Literacy Center

The Stanislaus Literacy Center is a non-profit organization providing free
tutoring in reading, writing, math and English for adults age 16 and up.
The range of services provides both one-on-one tutoring for adults who read
below a 7th grade level and a drop-in learning center for adults who need to
improve reading, math or writing skills in order to pass the GED test or
some other workplace test.

If you need help with basic reading, call 558-4505.  Dotti Young will
schedule a time for you to come in and help you fill out a form so you can
be matched with a volunteer who will meet with you twice a week or about
three hours a week.

If you read at or above an 8th grade level, but need help with reading
comprehension, writing or math, so you can pass the GED test or some other
test, call 548-9266.  You will then be scheduled to attend an orientation
which is offered Wednesdays at 9:45 a.m. and 1:45 a.m.  After attending
orientation and being tested to find out what skills need improvement, you
will meet with an instructor to start the tutoring process. A computer lab
is also available with software for skills improvement.

If you are a volunteer who would like to help someone else improve reading,
writing or math skills, you can call 558-4505 to sign up for the next new
tutor orientation and training.  The next opportunity is an orientation on
July 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Modesto Library in the downstairs
auditorium followed by a training on July 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the
same location.  Once you have attended the training, you will need to fill
out a form telling us what days and times you are available to tutor, so we
can "match" you with a student available when you are available.  A sign up
form is available on the website at www.readingworks.net/events.html.  There
is a materials charge of $10 which can be waived for anyone unable to afford
this expense.

If you want to donate to the Stanislaus Literacy Center, you can donate
safely online at our website.  There is also information about upcoming
fundraising events at http://www.readingworks.net/events.html including Sign
On To Literacy which allows you to place you name in a special section of
the Modesto Bee about literacy in Stanislaus County.  To be included in the
page, you need to donate at least $50. Donors give up to $1000.  Another
fundraising event is the Wine, Jazz and Movie Event to raise money and
awareness for adult literacy on Oct. 1 at the State Theatre in Modesto.  The
cost of the event is $25 per person and includes a wine and cheese
reception, jazz music and the movie, "Charly" based on the book "Flowers for
Algernon."

Other healthcare types affected are: Dental, Ment, , al Health, Chiropractic, and more are affected as well.
